Seen gun fighting scenes in Fast 5 ? 粉蓝医疗科技(杭州)有限公司官网入口 of the scenes were filmed in the most notorious slums in Rio de Janeiro. Today, I spent a full day in Santa Marta, the slum where Dominic Toretto and Luke Hobbs did their roof chase.
Have you been to Oakland, Southern Chicago, or Bronx? The worst neighborhoods in America minus gun violence are nothing compared to here. Santa Marta has the worst possible human living conditions I've ever seen: Deprived safety, limited space, and health concerns just about everything. Christ the Redeemer looks rainbow and sunshine, but you wouldn't know we were standing on the roof of an abandoned church. On my way to the upper part, I walked through an literal maze, seeing contaminated water channels, human wastes, dog wastes, construction materials, half-naked men with their cheap loud music and beers.
Everything was just so… different in this universe. The girl is 17, the mother of the kid. You won't tell her about feminism and how women should get education and postpone pregnancy. The boy is 16, and I'll be happy if he doesn't end up doing drugs or fathering someone soon… Poverty, that is what it boils down to - not just Santa Marta, but the massive developing world.
Yet, I felt bewildered. I was confused because this pair of brother and sister exhibited qualities many of us are too cool to have. They were warm, and friendly. They voluntarily offered me a tour within the slum to where Micheal Jackson came and performed in 1996. They advised me where to put my wallet and camera, and how to avoid troubles. They asked interesting questions that reflected intellectual curiosity. They asked how many languages I could speak. They asked where are these Honda Toyota Fiat Chevrolet Ford BMW automobiles made in as we spotted them passing by. They asked how many hours from New York to Rio, and they asked how New York looks like. Well… a lot of them I couldn't explain to them… not in the language they understand.
In the terms of socioeconomics, I just saw some people from the lower end, yet ironically they are happier than many of us, many many of us from the developed world and the well-offs. To wrap up my story and the long day: I played football with these kids - and football was straight up happiness for everyone.

Graduated from Berkeley, got a job in NYC, moved to the center of Manhattan, visited Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and everywhere California - thanks for the good year.
It's a little bit early until New Year's Eve, but I'll say it now. In 2014, aside from the educational degree I completed and the places/countries I traveled, I added about 2000 french words and 500 japanese idioms into my vocabulary. Of course, more to come in 2015 !

本帖最后由 Rebecca 于 2014-12-29 10:04:38 编辑 One of the bolivian nights in a remote dessert boarding Chile, we lodged at a provisional accommodation with neither electricity nor hot water. I sat alone under the most beautiful sky I've ever seen, soon it came an american girl.
"I might be privileged but am not rich; just have been very lucky to see parts of the world," said she, a solo travel girl from America, "You don't understand the obstacles traveling as a woman, but I'm here tonight."
For one second, I had a strange feeling that I am living in the Golden Age on massive free land of the Middle West. I ran back to my Highlander, switched on the engine, it played our Bolivian captain's MP3 music - and, coincidently it was a classic american song in the 90's.
Just one of those nights with a brave soul.

At a very quiet place on South American continent enjoying cachaca and singani cocktails... In 300 miles vicinity, only winds and sands and the american classic songs from the 80's, telling stories about the girls that made me happy the girls that made me sad.
_____ 在 Lithium Club Restaurant - Pub, Uyuni
People are the guide. Nature is the water closet. I hijacked a train to Chile.
